Man, I'm glad I was wrong
I underestimated the goodness of the American people, and I am glad I did. Tom Friedman said "And so it came to pass that on Nov. 4, 2008, shortly after 10 p.m. Eastern time, the American Civil War ended, as a black man — Barack Hussein Obama — won enough electoral votes to become president of the United States.". I still fear that we as a people are not nearly as good as we like to think we were, but on this night, I am less cynical than ever.
You have the mandate, President-Elect Obama, please, please, please don't let us down.
Political Predictions
Hear me now, believe me tomorrow.
- Withdrawn prior to election
Update: I couldn't remember last night which amendments have been withdrawn.
Update: The votes are in - I ended up 7 for 12. I don't plan to quit my day job.
Some times we do win....
Ted Stevens Is Indicted on Corruption Charges. Woo! Couldn't have happened to a more deserving asshat. Enjoy your forced retirement, Ted ol' boy. Perhaps you can finally learn how the intertubes really work.
Political Summary
The political season is upon us, and its going to be a very bumpy few months. I don't often talk politics here, but seeing as though this is a historic election, I think it wouldn't hurt to keep up to date on the proceedings. Here's a few observations from the last few weeks:
Hillary's Kennedy comment may have cost her a spot on the ticket as vice-president. Too bad, because I think it would have been really hard to beat an Obama/Hillary ticket. Oh, and to all the idiots calling up the radio station accusing Hillary of soliciting an assassination, I think your tinfoil hat need adjusting.
Fidel Castro "endorses" Obama. Which is worse, Fidel or Rush? Too close to call.
I need to pay more attention
One of the things about having a newborn is that no matter how much you try to avoid it, your focus turns nearly completely inward. Case in point? Its Friday, and I had absolutely no idea that Mitt Romney dropped out of the Republican race on Wednesday. I've long been a bit of a McCain fan. If we are to be a warring country (and there is every indication that we are), then I would like somebody like McCain at the helm. Not only has he fought in battle, but he has also experienced the nasty side as a prisoner of war. I think of all the candidates, he understands best not only the value of war (in certain situations), but also the danger of a quagmire. And its really not about Iraq at this point. That conflict will be with us, with the next president, and probably the president after that, regardless of what any of the candidates think. No, this is more about what we're going to do next. McCain is a bit of a war hawk, thats true, but I like to think that he wouldn't go to another needless war, and thats something I can buy into. I also like how he has a strong history of not bowing to pressure from his party - he has cross party lines more then once, and I don't think he would adjust his presidency to bow to any one segment of the Republican party (and certainly not the evangelicals). Now that he has the nomination all but sewn up, I think you'll see him quickly move to his nominal position just right of center. Now, this doesn't mean I'm going to vote for McCain, but of all the possible candidates that could have come from the GOP, he is certainly not the worse.
From the "Well, duhhhhh" department...
CNN is reporting that Mitt Romney won the Utah primary. Excuse me while I pick my jaw up off the ground.
Briliant + scary = briscary!
Ok - so, this is either brilliant satire, or very scary hate mongering. Either way - it is hilarious!
